Since launching Symplesound, my focus has been to create intuitive instruments and presets that make it easy for producers to create their own sounds – without having to be an expert at synthesizers.

Because of that, I decided to redesign all of the instruments on this blog and collect them into one pack, making everything much easier to use. The pack also includes tutorials, integrated effects and MIDI clips for inspiration.

They're still 100% free – because I want to continue supporting synth fans everywhere – and they're now available at the Symplesound shop, along with more free downloads and goodies.

So... Last week, I released my latest single on Audiophile Deep - "A Night At The Opera" - which is a dark track that's ideal for Halloween sets. At the time of this writing, it's still climbing the Traxsource tech house chart, so I'm stoked for that :)

There's a full preview at the bottom of this post and you can pick it up at Traxsource here.

But that's not the sole purpose for this post. In addition to making tracks and designing presets, I've been working on a different approach to sound itself that I hope you'll dig.

The idea is simple: Recreate real-world soundscapes as accurately as possible using synthesis – in this case, Ableton's Operator softsynth – so that the result is a virtual environment that sounds real, but was created entirely in Live.

In keeping with all of this Halloween spookiness, my first work in this medium is called "The Haunting" and it's a two-minute composition inspired by the classic haunted house meme.

Below is a Soundcloud audio preview. I'm also including the entire Ableton project file so people with Live and Operator (or Suite) can check out each sound and explore how it was created. And yes, you can use it in commercial projects - as long as you please credit me and send a courtesy notification. I'm easy that way.

This is completely new territory for me as an artist, so I hope it inspires people to delve deeper into sound design. I definitely have more projects like these and I plan to give them away on this blog as a way to teach producers that there's more you can do with synths besides make them beep.

(And if you appreciate what I'm doing here and want to show some love, please buy "A Night At The Opera" on Traxsource.)

A few months back, I reviewed the Novation Bass Station II for Keyboard Magazine. As modern analog synths go, the BSII packs a lot of analog power into a small footprint. So while I had it in my studio, I couldn't resist snagging a few samples of it to share with everyone.

For those who aren't up to speed on the Bass Station II, it's a dual-oscillator analog monosynth with a sub-oscillator and tons of nifty filtering modes, along with a nasty little distortion. As the name implies, it excels at bass, so that's the focus of this new pack.

The Bass Station II instruments in the file are as follows:

Acid - Super-resonant, making great use of the BSII's "acid" filter mode

Big-n-Round - Tons of low end with muted filtering. Great for deep house.

Filthy - Massive 'big room' bass that highlights the BSII distortion. Works for leads too.

PWM - Pulse-width modulation with a touch of resonant fizziness.

Rush - Emulates the classic Moog Taurus sound with a long resonant filter sweep.

Subby Saw - Percussive filter enveloping on a sawtooth - with sub-osc mixed in for added boom.

Note 1: If you like any of these sounds and want to keep them for future tracks, just click the little save button in the upper right corner of the Simpler and add it to your library (it will copy the waves too).

Note 2: If you don't use Ableton and just want the C3 samples, you can download the file and fish the waves out of the "Samples" folder, then use them in your DAW or sampler of choice.

Moog's Sub Phatty (the basis for their new Sub 37, incidentally) takes their Phatty engine and adds a sub-oscillator and new "Multidrive" circuits that are capable of some really in-your-face sounds.

Since I've been using it for close to a year, I figured it was time for another round of Moog-based Simpler patches. Because the Multidrive is so unique and the extra sub-oscillator adds textural complexity, I focused on those for this pack.

The Sub Phatty instruments in the file are as follows:

Deeper - This is an all-purpose patch with a percussive attack and filtered sustain. Works well for both midrange riffs and bass lines.

Farfisting - The Sub Phatty isn't polyphonic, but in Simpler it is, so I made a solid sustaining sound that's evocative of the classic Farfisa organ.

Gigantor - Name says it all. Big-ass sound with a cranked-up Moog Multidrive.

Major Fourth - Interval detuning. Great for old-school electro riffs ala D.Ramirez and Greg Kobe - especially when you add some portamento/glide :)

Nasty - Who doesn't love hard sync and distortion?

Screamer - More multidriven goodness, with a bit of internal modulation going on.

Subsonica - Super-deep Moog bass sound. Protect your woofers, K?

Thwacker - Another interval-detuned patch with a bit more attack. Percussive and plucky in the mid-to-upper ranges. Aliased and bit-crushy in the bass register.

Yep, the instruments are in default mode, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points for your own sounds.

I just reviewed the new Korg Volca Series for Keyboard Magazine and the full report will be coming in the March 2014 issue. Until then, let's just say I'm quite taken with the Volca Beats groove box. Sooo…

Since these analog babies are backordered, well, everywhere, I figured it might be a cool idea to post a loop pack for y'all.

To keep things useful and interesting, I mixed up the pack with some full grooves, some kick/snare patterns, some hats and some top percussion loops.

Everything is 24-bit/44.1 and all loops are two bars long. I even did a bit of multiband compression and limiting, so they're good to go.

Also, it's worth mentioning that every loop is 123 BPM, because house.

You can download it all here:

I'm also breaking with tradition and including twelve presets instead of the usual six. See what I did there?

Since there are so many chord types and P12 patches in this collection, I'm just going to skip the usual descriptors and let you dive into this Simpler pack on your own. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

All of instruments are in default mode, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off. No looping. Full length samples, some have a touch of vibrato at the end.

Korg's MS-20 Mini has quickly become one of the biggest synths of 2013. Maybe even THE biggest synth of 2013.

With its full-figured filters and a semi-modular approach to sound design, the MS-20 has a sound that's so beefy and unique that it's earned a very special place in my studio.

Having tinkered with it for the better part of the summer, I figured it was time for another six-pack of Simpler patches. Since the MS-20's filters are so distinctive, I focused on their sound as the basis for these presets.

The MS-20 instruments in the file are as follows:

Ring Fizz - Combining the MS20's ring mod (using a major third interval) with super-resonant filters resulted in this nasty patch. Check out the freaky aliasing in the top octaves.

Reso Square - I tuned the filters to match the square wave oscillators, which added a light quiver to the overall tone.

Res Saw Interval - Interval tuning on a pair of sawtooth oscillators, again with the resonance cranked for additional harmonic emphasis.

Noise Square - Using the MS20's patch bay, I modulated the filter cutoff with some white noise. Dirty.

Filter Frenzy - With the filter resonance adding some "ghost" tones, I dropped one of the oscillators by an octave to increase the low-end content. For some serious boom, lower the cutoff frequency on this Simpler patch.f

Detuned Pulse - A pair of pulse waves detuned with the lowpass open and the highpass subtly boosting the lows.

As usual, the instruments are in default mode, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points for your own sounds.

With all of the modulation and detuning going on, looping was a challenge, so I took longer samples to capture the character a bit more accurately

Dirty Fiver - One oscillator is set to square, the other's set to a sawtooth, then detuned a fifth apart. There's a little bit of sub-oscillator and a touch of filter feedback too.

SH101 Saw - Basic single oscillator SH-101 sawtooth.

SH101 Square - Basic single oscillator SH-101 square wave.

SH101 PWM - One of the truly classic SH-101 sounds lies in the character of its pulse width modulation.

SH101 Saw+Sub - Another signature sound from the 101 comes from its sub-oscillator. Here, I blended it with a sawtooth waveform.

SH101 ResSweep - The SH-101 shipped around the same time as the legendary TB-303 - and many producers have used the 101 in similar ways. The resonance on this synth is exceptional, so here's a taste.

SH101 Resonant - This is another example of the SH-101's resonance, generating a whistling tone over a square/pulse wave.

SH101 Noise - Lots of 80s tracks used the SH101's midrange-heavy noise generator for synth drums, so I included a sample of it here.

SH101 Bass - Gotta have some bass too, right?

As with the all of the other Simpler packages on this blog, I left the devices in their default state, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points for your own sounds.

That said, I did some quick-n-dirty looping on these patches, which was tricky due to the nature of Simpler and the slight inconsistencies of analog-derived waves. Fortunately, the samples are long enough that many users will be able to switch it off if they choose.

(For those who create cleaner loops for these presets, please send them my way and I'll update the package accordingly.)

To celebrate hitting 10,000 fans on my Facebook page a couple of weeks back, I took a poll to see what synth in my studio you wanted me to sample next.

The overwhelming response was my beloved Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08.

So… Here ya go! :)

The Simpler instruments in the file are as follows:

P8 Saw - Basic single oscillator Prophet sawtooth.

P8 Square - Basic single oscillator Prophet square wave.

P8 Pulse - Basic single oscillator Prophet pulse/rectangle wave.

P8 2x Fifths - Two octaves of fifth intervals. Super thick and Mau5-ish.

P8 Big Octaves - Four octaves of a basic dual-oscillator patch. "Undertaker" and "Ghosts-n-Stuff" fans are gonna love this one.

P8 Detuned Saws - One of the hallmark sounds of ALL Prophets.

P8 Deep Drone - Big, throbbing detuned bass drone.

P8 Sync Sweep - Long slow hard sync sweep with tight short loop at the end. If you want to have a lot of fun with this patch, start by adjusting the sample start point. You'll see ;)

P8 Res Sweep - Resonant sweep with a touch of white noise and a tight loop at the end. As with the Sync Sweep patch, try tinkering with the start point.

As with the Minitaur and Doepferheim packs, these Simplers in their default state, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points for your own sounds.

I did handle the looping tasks myself, because several friends commented that it's rather tough to get them right if you're inexperienced with the process.

Here's a fun aside: The "Marina" lead sound is in this collection, but it requires some additional programming. See if you can find it.
Fans and friends of mine know that my studio consists of a ton of analog gear, arranged in a semi-modular configuration - and I'm constantly experimenting...

One of the cornerstones of this rig is a baby modular, created by pairing a Doepfer Dark Energy Mk 1 and an Oberheim SEM CV-edition.

You can find all of the tech specs in this article I did for Keyboard Magazine last year.

A lot of people have asked what this beastie sounds like, so I decided to whip up a new Ableton six-pack that showcases some of the sounds it can generate.

As with all of these downloads, they're free and you can use them in your tracks - royalty-free.

It's worth mentioning that these samples are not looped, so they retain the true oscillating chaos of analog circuits. As a result, the download file is 24 MB. Just a heads up.

The Simpler instruments in the file are as follows:

Doepferheim Deepbass - This is dual-oscillator filtered bass. Great for subby drones and breakdowns.

Doepferheim Notchsweep - Here's a triple-oscillator patch that uses both the Doepfer and Oberheim oscillators, running through the legendary Oberheim notch filter.

Doepferheim Sync - This patch features a super slow sync sweep on the Oberheim oscillators, while the Doepfer reinforces the fundamental tone.

Doepferheim Carhorny - Detuned major chord that sounds a heck of a lot like a careworn. Suitable for early 90s techno revivalists.

Doepferheim Fifth - Tightly tuned fifth interval with reinforced fundamental. Deadmau5 fans should dig this one ;)

Doepferheim PWM - Detuning and pulse width modulation are the key components in this fat little preset.

As with the Minitaur pack a few months back, I left the Simplers in their default state, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points in your sonic adventures.
The Moog Minitaur is one of the most buzzworthy hardware synths of the year.

It's an all-analog bass synth, with a knob for every function, that costs around $600 (US).

To honor the release of this synth - and commemorate hitting 3000 Facebook likes for my Official page - I whipped up a four-pack of Ableton Simplers that demonstrate how amazing this synth sounds.

And yep, they're free and you can use them in your tracks - royalty-free.

Note: These Minitaur samples are not looped, to get the true oscillating chaos of analog circuits. As a result, the download file is 12 MB. Just a heads up.

The Simpler instruments in the file are as follows:

MT Filtered is the classic Moog sound, with the filter mostly closed to boost warmth and intensity.

MT DualOct consists of two Minitaur oscillators an octave apart - one saw and one square - with the filter wide open so you can use third-party filters if needed.

MT Fifth is that classic Moog dual-oscillator fifth sound that Deadmau5 uses to great effect. Again, filter wide open.

MT Detuned is another dual-oscillator saw/square patch with slight detuning, filter open.

I left the Simplers in their default state, with filtering, LFOs and envelopes off, so you can use them as starting points in your sonic adventures.

Wubwubwubwubwubwubwub. Urp.

I swore I'd never make a straight-up dubstep bass patch, but since that train shows no sign of stopping this year, it's time for me to jump the shark.

Of course, I couldn't resist calling attention to that fact, so the preset is named... Well, you KNOW what it's named.

The process for creating the patch:

First, I created a hard sounding buzzy wave using my modular Doepferheim (see here for more info), then I blasted the levels as I recorded it into Ableton.

From there, I created a very short loop in Simpler and mapped the start point to a Macro knob so you can scan it as a wavetable. Just. Like. Massive.

I then added two effects to the chain - a phaser and an overdrive. The phaser is for doing pseudo formant-shifting effects. Just. Like. Massive.

The overdrive is for adding distortion to the sound. Just. Like. Massive.

And naturally, I added a tempo-synced LFO to the filter cutoff.

Finally, I fiddled with the ranges for each Macro for maximum tweakability. After all, wub-wubs are nice & stuff, but for a synth to be useful it's got to have some flexibility, y'know?

Here's a guide to the macros:

Spectra: Scans the source sample for a wavetable effect

Formant: Shifts the frequency of the formant peak created by the phaser

Lowpass: Cutoff frequency for the lowpass filter. Works in conjunction with the Wub parameters

Drive Color: Controls the drive amount and EQ of the overdrive effect

Envelope: Morphs the amplifier envelope from a percussive shape to a full sustain, gated shape

Glide: Gliiiiiiide

Wub Rate: Controls the speed of the filter LFO (tempo-synced)

Wub Depth: Controls the depth of the filter LFO

For examples, I created two clips in Live's session window. One does the classic dubstep wub-wub thing. The other is a more percussive, staccato riff to demonstrate the range of the instrument.

I promised I'd release a preset once my new "Official" Facebook page hit 500 friends, so here ya go.

Some of you may recall the nifty video for Swedish House Mafia's hit with Pharrell Williams, "One". In the video, the intro (0:10-0:35) apparently used one of Teenage Engineering's white hot OP-1 synths to morph a kick drum into the lead riff.

Well, as cool as the OP-1 is, you can also do this trick rather easily with Ableton Live, so I created an Instrument Rack based on one of the free kicks from Matt Lange's isoRhythm packs (Thanks, Matt).

There are three macros that duplicate the programming and effects used in the intro part for "One" - Loop Rate for the kick sample, Reverb amount and a touch of Flanging at the end before the riff begins.
To make everything crystal clear, I created a passage in Live's arrange window that uses automation to duplicate the process SHM used in their track (but of course with a different riff, so no one gets annoyed with me).

Oh god, where do I begin? My last entry was in August 2011, FFS!

Since then, I've decided to focus ALL of my energy on Academik Records. Not that I don't love making and giving away free sounds and tech tidbits, but between music, DJing, running a label, writing for Keyboard Magazine (and soon, a very cool EDM blog you may have heard of ;), and being a college professor, something had to go.

So it's this blog. Don't worry, I've actually been working on a few cool goodies for Live users. That's coming later this spring.

But for now, I'm all about Academik and making killer tracks with heroes, colleagues and protégées. When I take a break, I'll get back to blogging regularly. Promise.

Until then, friend me on Facebook, like Academik on FB, and follow me & the label on Twitter. I assure you, I'm making a LOT of noise in those channels.

Much love and thanks for the support last year.Academikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15388416461246667216noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832185866472291395.post-17645536393241368852011-08-04T10:30:00.001-05:002011-08-04T11:28:08.966-05:00Vibelung: Circuitflu - Now available at Beatport.com

Changing things up a bit, Academik's second EP veers into techno territory with the contagious vibe of Circuitflu.

The original mix is a mutant hybrid of minimal techno fused with hints of clever IDM, courtesy of Dallas-based electro/techno DJ, Vibelung (aka Jimmy Freer). With Circuitflu, Freer's approach to minimal blends clever robot voices with pounding 808-style kicks and a synth riff that evokes the Knight Rider theme without reeking of irony or litigation.

Francis Prève's reinterpretation of Circuitflu turns up the boom with his infectious brand of techno, gene-spliced with a strand of DNA from the better strains of electro. Starting with a handclap-heavy dark groove reminiscent of classic Peace Division, Prève's remix builds to a massive peak that bounces and throbs its way into one of Preve's trademark rising leads. The result is a big room monster that's guaranteed to pack summer floors both at peak-time and after-hours.

Here's what some of the world's top DJs are saying about the Circuitflu EP:

"Simple and quirky.. Francis Prève remix for me."
- Blake Jarrell

"Francis' remix does it for me."
- MC Flipside

"Both tracks are great!! Will play both at different times. THANKS!"
- Jan van Lier

"I love this release! Will definitely be supporting both mixes."
- William A

"Cool Francis Mix!"
- Sean Tyas

"Like the energetic Francis Prève mix."
- DJ Ron (About.com)

"The Original takes the sounds on a minimal journey whereas the Preve Remix gets your innards rumbling from the kick and bass groove all the while keeping the funk. Solid!"
- Jason Jenkins (Hypersonic.com)

As with all Academik releases, the Circuitflu EP includes individual audio tracks as part of the full album download, so producers and DJs can remix and remake the track according to their own vision.

In the pantheon of vintage analog drum machines, there's an unsung classic that isn't from a big name manufacturer like Roland or Korg, but from a toy company. Released in 1981, the Mattel Synsonics was an affordable black box that housed a fully analog kit consisting of kick, two toms, snare, cymbal and hi-hat - all playable via velocity sensitive pads.

Of course, since it was a "toy", few artists took it very seriously - with one notable exception: Kraftwerk.

Unlike the more insectile sounds coming from the Roland and Korg boxes of the same era, the sound of the Synsonics was vaguely reminiscent of the Simmons SDS-V or Pollard Syndrum. The toms had an aggressive vibe that few products from that time could match - and the cymbals were glorious blasts of white noise.
About a month ago, I pulled my Synsonics of its shelf in my studio, fired it up and started sampling. The results are in this Live 7 compatible Drum Rack. Hope you dig it.

Yeah, it's like THAT.

Before they got into producing pop that even my Aunt Suzi likes, Spandau Ballet were purveyors of edgy New Romantic brilliance like this barely-known gem: "To Cut A Long Story Short"

(And for synth trivia buffs, it's a Roland ProMars Compuphonic that Gary Kemp's playing.)
This month's bootleg is a bit of a departure - and very much a labor of love.

Last month, one of my favorite area DJs, Remington Steele, dropped this track at the Academik Records photoshoot at Austin über-club, Kingdom. I kinda dropped everything and ran to the DJ booth and asked "What is THIS!?!"

"You don't know this? It's called 'This Rhythm' and it's like two years old!", replied Remington.

Well, NO DJ keeps track of everything, right?

I was a huge fan of Filthy Dukes' track "Messages" in 2009 but this gem slipped past my radar, probably because it's the Fred Falke remix that makes the track work for me - and I was only familiar with the original.

I promptly tracked down the remix and started pairing it up with some favorites in my current crate.

After 15 minutes, I chanced upon "Back & Forth feat. Mr. V (Fedde's Future Funk Remix)" by Fedde le Grand and knew I had the makings of a VERY summery little mashup.

It all came together quite quickly and the result is so natural it's hard to figure out which track is which - always a goal for me when whipping up a bootleg.

Hope you dig it as much as I do. Cheers!

Ah, the sine wave...

For years, I have referred to this wonderful little waveform as "the atom of sound". Without the sine wave, no other waveform could exist, since every complex or single-cycle wave is comprised entirely of sine waves - whether they are harmonically related or a cacophony of chaotic tones.

So, as an exercise, I created this month's preset - Sine Of The Times - out of two single sine waves an octave apart, just to see if I could make it do as many tricks as possible via clever macro assignments.

The result exceeded my expectations and hopefully yours too.

To prove this, the Sine Of The Times Live set is comprised of four sequences that all use the same patch as their starting point.

Track 1 is a hip-hop style jeep bass that consists of a single low sine wave. Classic. Timeless.

Track 2 is a soprano/choir patch that's reminiscent of the lead from Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" (or if you prefer, the original Star Trek theme).

Track 3 is a plucky sequence with a touch of pitch bend in each note's attack.

Track 4 is a fairly accurate recreation of the legendary Roland TR-808 tom/conga that can be further modified via the macros.

All from the same pair of sine waves, with a touch of chorus and reverb.

TECH NOTES
